Shocking Treatment of Teenage Mother: Power-Tripping Social Workers and Overzealous Cops Used Bad Judgement

September 27th, 2008No Comments

There are good cops and there are bad ones. There are smart ones and there are dumb ones. There are cops who exercise good judgement, and then there are cops who don’t. The same can be said about social workers.

A mentally unbalanced teenage mother (so “they” say) who is under the care of social services in British Columbia was tasered by police after they were summoned by social workers who had an apprehension order issued by the Ministry of Children and Family Development in hand.

Social workers were attempting to take the child for medical treatment, and for whatever reason they felt they needed an apprehension order to do that, and when they attempted to take the baby into their care the teenage mother refused to hand her child over. Can’t say as I blame her given the heavy-handed tactics social workers are known to employ at times.

Social services called in the police when things got a little dicey for them. By doing that they made an already tense situation much worse, and the teenager would have dug in her heels and resisted any attempt by authorities to take her child from her arms. She would have been in protection-mode, and she would have made sure that no harm came to her baby.

The teenage mother is tasered, social services take the child from the mother’s arms and their job is done for the time being.

After writing their incident reports they head out for a cocktail to discuss the day’s events, get their stories straight, or something like that.

Now the police have to justify their actions, which in my opinion will be nothing but a bunch of bullshit to cover their own asses.

For police to offer up the excuse that they tasered the teenage mother because they feared she might smother her baby is a crock of shit. It’s more like they wanted to end the situation that had arisen thanks to social services as quickly as possible because they had more important things to do.

Bet on it, the cop tasered this girl to end the situation as quickly as possible, not because they worried she would smother her child. That’s just too convenient of an excuse in my opinion. With that logic police are telling us that every mother who holds their child in their arms is at risk of smothering their child, whether the mother is in distress or not. What bullshit.

Whoever authorized the use of the stun gun should be suspended.

Having said that, I have worked or come into contact with teenager mothers, some of whom were also mentally unbalanced and in distress, and never have I ever thought while that teenage mother was acting out and holding her child in her arms did I think she would smother her child to death. For the police to make such an assumption with little basis to go on other than the fact the mother was holding her child in her arms while resisting turning her child over to child welfare or social workers is not good enough for me, and it shouldn’t be good enough for the public at large. This was just plain wrong, and God knows what could have happened to that child. Thank God nothing did.

Watch for social services to claim that they were shocked (no pun intended) by the use of the taser gun in this incident later on. They will try to distance themselves from the police version of events, and they will pass the buck as to their handling of the mother’s file by all those involved in managing her case file.

I have worked with social workers in the past I can tell you there are some that are some that are overzealous, and more often than not they go on power trips, which I think is the case in this instance, otherwise they wouldn’t have applied for an apprehension order in the first place.

For those of you that disagree with me think about it, the teenage mother was already in their care, living in a group home, and they need an apprehension order to get the child medical care, get real. The apprehension order has power trip written all over it.

Something stinks in the social worker shithouse, and if I were to hazard a guess, there is a helluva lot more to this teenage mother’s story than we will ever learn thanks to confidentiality agreements that social workers and counsellors (childcare workers) at the group home sign. Of course the teenager isn’t bound to such confidentiality agreements, and I am sure she’ll have quite a tale to tell now that she has been tasered by cops while she was holding her child in her arms.

What happened to the teenage mother and her child was wrong, and heads should roll.

One other thing, according to the report the one-month old baby was critically ill. Now I find myself asking was the baby critically ill before the teenage mother left the group home, or was that diagnosis made after the fact? It seems odd to me that police would taser a woman with a critically ill baby in her arms.
