For the 10th time in Whistler this year, a bear has been shot dead, and I for one believe that killing 10 bears so far in less than a year is unnecessary and irresponsible.
Whatever happened to trapping a bear and returning it to its natural habitat, or is that too much like work these days?
While I’m all for taking down a bear that is an OBVIOUS threat to the community at large, I hardly think a bear rummaging through garbage looking for food poses any more of danger than a cop with a taser gun.
As for the Australian tourist that suffered a minor bite on the leg a day before that same bear was shot, conservation officers were right when they said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but they should have added that the bite victim and the mob that surrounded the bear for a photo-op should have exercised some common sense and realized that a FRIGHTENED bear is a dangerous bear.
The bite victim is lucky the bear didn’t rip his effin’ head off, and give the bear credit for not wanting to rip his head off.
Shooting 10 bears in a year in the Whistler area alone because somebody thought a bear foraging through garbage was a threat to the community, get real. Leave a black bear alone while it looking for food, and the bear will leave you alone.
When I lived in Sundridge, Ontario I often had to take trips to the dump during the 5-years I was there, and on any given day during the spring, summer and fall, at least a half dozen black bears would be rummaging through the dump, some as close as 15 feet from where I was standing. They were more afraid of me than I was afraid of them. I wasn’t stupid enough and brain-dead as those idiots in Whistler however, and I certainly didn’t stand there gawking at them. I went about my business and left them alone.
Not once during the 5-years I lived in sunny Sundridge did I ever hear of bear attack in the dump, or in the surrounding area. There were lots of bear sightings, and other than hunting season I never heard of a bear being shot.
The people, who live, work and play in Whistler need to get a grip.
